Healthcare Patient Transporter (HPT) and Certified Healthcare Transporter (CHT) both support growth in patient transport, but they serve different points in the career path. Understanding the distinction helps a new hire choose a starting point and helps a hospital build a sensible training plan.
HPT is a foundation for entering the role
The HPT program is an online foundational certificate for new and aspiring transporters. It is designed to build the knowledge and technical skills needed at the start of a patient transport career. It can give an individual a structured introduction before applying for a role or help a department give new hires a shared baseline.
Impact Training Online provides the self-paced learning platform. Hospital-specific orientation and observed practice still matter because equipment, routes, escalation processes, and clinical policies differ by facility.
CHT recognizes a broader professional pathway
The CHT credential is a professional patient transport certification managed by Impact Training Company. Its pathway covers technical skills, workplace choices and ethics, and applied decision-making. The program is developed with and endorsed by the National Association of Healthcare Transport Management (NAHTM). See our certification overview for the tiers and additional options.
A credential is useful when a transporter has moved beyond an introduction and wants to show continued professional development. For a hospital, it can create a shared language for expectations, advancement, and coaching across a department.
Already employed in transport? CHT requires your hospital's instructor-led training and documented workplace validation. Start with the certification requirements and hospital pathway. Purchasing participant materials or an exam alone does not earn the credential.

How to choose a path
| If you are... | Consider starting with... |
|---|---|
| Exploring patient transport or newly hired | HPT foundations alongside facility orientation and supervised practice. |
| Already working in transport | CHT to develop and demonstrate deeper professional knowledge. |
| Leading a hospital transport team | A staged plan: foundational training for new hires, then CHT development for experienced staff. |
Ask the program provider about current prerequisites, assessment, fees, and renewal requirements before enrolling. Your employer may also have its own training or reimbursement policy.
Keep the learning connected to the shift
Training has more value when staff use it in the work they do every day. Pair lessons with observed transports, brief coaching after difficult handoffs, and regular refreshers on safe handling and infection prevention. The strongest pathway is one your team can explain clearly: learn the basics, demonstrate safe local practice, then keep building professional skills.
