A complete professional development system - foundation, tiered CHT certification, leadership credentials, and an apex management certification - delivered by Impact Training Company in partnership with NAHTM since 2003.
The complete ITC/NAHTM system on one map - the three CHT tiers, the nine post-certification endorsements, and the leadership pathway from instructor to director.
The HPT certificate is the accessible on-ramp into the profession; the tiered CHT program is the national certification standard.
Entry-level certificate and professional pipeline into the full CHT program. Self-paced online training covering the fundamentals of safe, professional patient transport.
The profession's recognized certification - a train-the-trainer program built on actual transporter job tasks and educational research, delivered through three tiers that teach the what, the why, and the how. Most programs only teach the what.
Technical Skills Training. Core job tasks and safe transport practices: patients' rights, infection control, equipment proficiency, BLS skills, safe movement, and special situations (MRI, cardiac cath, O₂ and more). Meets Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and Environment of Care mandates.
10 hrs class · 2 wks OJT · 80-item validation kit + observed capstone
Choices: Ethics for the Workplace. Nine modules of life and interpersonal skills - self-esteem, courtesy, emotional maturity, conscientiousness, trustworthiness, job commitment, safe performance, and recognizing work-disruptive behaviors. Transporters call it life-changing, on and off the job.
9 modules · behavioral validation rated on the floor
Strategic Skill Building. Applied cognitive strategies using real job materials and scenarios: professional communication, interpreting procedural directions, recognizing changing conditions, prioritization, prediction, and decision-making - the thinking skills that separate outstanding performers.
3 modules · mastery tests + culminating performance assessment
Leadership credentials recognize transporters who have advanced into training, supervisory, and management roles - each level with a dedicated certification.
Train and certify CHTs at your own facility. Live virtual training; renewal every five years with continuing education or service. Next cohort: September 15–16, 2026.
In Development · Pilot 2027
Certification for frontline transport supervisors - recognizing the leaders who run shifts, coach teams, and keep flow moving hour to hour. Pilot cohort summer 2027; full launch late 2027.
Planned · 2028
Certification for transport directors - the department-level leaders accountable for staffing, performance, and transport's role in hospital throughput. Launching on the road to 2028.
The apex credential of the ITC/NAHTM system: a proctored, competency-based written exam for supervisors, managers, and directors. In active development with a dedicated development committee - exam finalization expected end of 2026, active at NAHTM 2027.
Ten specialty endorsements - earned after CHT certification - are in active development, including the new CHT-P (Pharmacy and Controlled-Substance Transport). The CHT-LT (Lift Team) endorsement, for example, covers safe patient handling, mechanical lift operation, and bariatric transport protocols.
Endorsements roll out through 2028; launch dates announced as each is ready.
Every tier is built on a dedicated published workbook - written by learning-science specialists and grounded in actual transporter job tasks.

For certified instructors
CHT-1 teaches the what (technical skills), CHT-2 the why (behavioral and ethical foundations through the Choices curriculum), and CHT-3 the how (applied thinking and decision-making skills). Together they produce behavior change, not just technical competence - the ITC difference.
CHT certifies a transporter. CHTI certifies an instructor - a leader authorized to train and certify CHTs at their facility. Departments typically credential one or two instructors, who then certify their staff in-house.
Three dedicated certifications: CHTI for instructors, CHTS for transport supervisors, and CHTD for transport directors - with CPTMP arriving as the apex management certification at NAHTM 2027.
The CHT program has operated in partnership with NAHTM - the national association for transport management - since 2003, with 810+ credentials on record across 41 organizations, and CHT-1 content aligned to Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
Yes - credentials carry expiration dates and renewal requirements, in line with accreditation best practice. The CHT credential renews every five years: a renewal capstone (one observed supervised transport) plus a behavioral validation, submitted within the 90-day renewal window with a $30 fee. CHTI also renews every five years through continuing education or professional service.
The most economical route is the CHTI pathway: credential an internal instructor, then certify your team in-house on your schedule, with volume discounts available on training materials. Contact info@ImpactTrainingCompany.com for department pricing.
